Ever wondered what germs live in and around your house? This gross experiment will help you and your kids to discover all of the mold living in your house that can’t be seen with the naked eye. Check it out:
What you need:
- Unflavored gelatin
- Sanitized jars or cups
What to do:
- Boil two cups of water and dissolve the gelatin in it to prepare it. Put some of the gelatin in each of your containers. You don’t need too much in each container. Let it harden.
- Wet a q-tip and swab a commonly touched surface in your house. Do this with multiple q-tips on multiple surfaces.
- Label each container with the surface swabbed and rub the corresponding q-tip all over the gelatin inside.
- Have your kids guess which surfaces they think will grow the most mold. Wait a week for maximum mold growth and check to see if your guesses were right!
The gelatin provides the sugary base that the germs and mold in your house need to grow. You’ll be surprised at which surfaces are actually the dirtiest in your house and how much mold can grow from spores you can’t even see.
