Nutrition is a perfect example of a subject that is easy to fit into your daily teaching schedule while still being a very important segment of knowledge that your children can use for the rest of their lives. To get you started, we’ve found a simple and easy nutrition activity to introduce the topic. Here’s how it works:
What you’ll need:
- Pictures of food – from magazines, grocery store ads, or printed out
- A piece of paper
- Something to write with
- Glue or tape
What to do:
- Have your child fold the piece of paper in half or draw a line down the middle. On one side, they should write “Healthy” at the top and on the other, “Unhealthy.”
- With the scissors, have them cut out food items one by one. As they cut it out, discuss with them whether they think that food is healthy or unhealthy. Once they’ve figured it out, with or without your help, have them stick it on the corresponding side of the paper.
- Continue this process until the page is completely full. Finish with a discussion on what it is that makes different foods healthy and unhealthy and how to manage a balanced diet while still getting to eat the yummy foods they love! This makes a great poster to hang up in your kitchen or elsewhere as a helpful reminder.
