Christmas is already here! In the days ahead, try out a few of these Christmas-themed science projects. They’ll help your kids get into the spirit and learn at the same time. Check them out:
- The Peppermint Project: This activity is super simple. All you need are some peppermints or candy canes and some sort of container filled with water. The process is even simpler. Have your child drop a peppermint or candy cane into the water. Have them observe what happens and discuss or write down their thoughts. The red color from the candy will fade away and likely make the water pink, ask your child why they think this happens. The candy will continue to dissolve in the water so feel free to discuss why sugar dissolves in water or other related topics!
- DIY Stained Glass Ornaments: This project is super simple and fun! You’ll need some pipe cleaners and baking crystals. Have your child construct a flat shape with the pipe cleaners - this will be the outline of the ornament. Then on a lined baking sheet, lay out the outlines and fill them with the baking crystals. Make sure the pipe cleaners are really flat on the baking sheet. Bake at 400 degrees for 15 minutes and then let them cool. And you’re done! Discuss with your child the different states of matter and how temperature changes allow the crystals to go from a solid state to a liquid and back to a solid again. Then hang their brand new ornaments up on the tree!
- Grow your own Christmas tree: This activity is perfect if your child is learning about biology or plants specifically. You’ll need a sponge and some grass seeds, and a little bit of patience. Have your child cut the sponge into the shape of a Christmas tree. When it’s finished, soak the sponge in water and then have your child cover the top of it with seeds. Using a spray bottle, spray the seeds until they are damp. And that’s it! Have your child spray the sponge every day and watch the seeds go through the plant cycle. Soon enough they’ll have their own miniature Christmas tree!
